What is Civil Law?
Civil law is a branch of the legal system that deals with disputes between individuals, businesses or other entities, or both, typically involving private rights and contracts. Unlike criminal law, which focuses on crimes and punishing offenders, civil law aims to resolve conflicts and provide remedies. These usually take the form of compensation / money damages or “equitable remedies” such as injunctions.

What are common areas of civil law?
Contract Law: A branch of civil law that governs the creation, execution, and enforcement of agreements between parties. It ensures that promises made in agreements (both written and verbal) are honored and provides remedies when one party fails to meet their obligations. Common examples of issues include disputes with a contractor, a person’s failure to pay back a loan, and two businesses fighting over agreed services.
Property Law: A branch of civil law that governs the ownership, use, and transfer of property. This covers tangible and intangible assets, including real estate, tangible personal property like vehicles, and intellectual property. The primary focus of property law is to define ownership, resolve disputes, and facilitate transactions. Common examples of issues include property-line disputes, fights about ownership of assets, and foreclosures on loans such as mortgages.
Tort Law: A branch of civil law that addresses wrongful acts that cause injury or “damages” to people and/or their property. Its purpose is to help people who have suffered harm because of another person’s actions (or lack of action). Common examples of issues include dog bite cases, recovering money from a person who damages your house or vehicle, and claims against someone for “defamation” (what we used to call libel & slander).
Employment Law: A branch of civil law that governs the relationship between employers and employees. It provides a legal framework for workplace practices, ensuring fair treatment, safety, and non-discrimination, while also balancing the needs of employers and their workers. Common examples of issues include employment contract disputes, wage disputes, and questions about whether a person should be considered a W-2 employee or a 1099 contractor.
